(NYT12) SALISBURY, Conn. -- Sept. 18, 2003 -- APPALACHIAN-PILGRIMS -- From mid-summer through the late fall, thousands of hikers make their way along the Appalachian Trail, many of them determined to travel the entire 2,155-mile trek from Georgia to Maine in one fell swoop. "We see them as pilgrims,'' said the Rev. John Carter, the minister of St. John's Episcopal Church in Salisbury, Conn., which opens its doors to hikers in need of a bathroom, a drink of water, or perhaps a place to rest. The view from Lion's Head, which overlooks the town of Salisbury, along the Appalachian Trail in far northwestern Connecticut. (Joseph Kugielsky/The New York Times)
