(NYT35) CANTON, Ohio -- Sept. 12, 2003 -- OHIO-JOBS -- Over the last three years Ohio has lost more than 160,000 factory jobs, part of the 2.7 million manufacturing jobs lost nationwide in the last three years. This loss of factory jobs has snowballed into a huge social and political issue across the Midwest. For 29 years, Jim Greathouse was part of the blue-collar elite, a tool-and-dye man making precision metal molds that factories use to stamp parts. In June, Greathouse lost his job at the Hoover's vacuum cleaner factory in Canton, and with so many other factories laying off people, he is at a loss about what to do next. Greathouse, foreground, talks about being laid off, as Dan Croston, also laid off, looks on, in Canton, Sept. 11, 2003. (David Maxwell/The New York Times)
