(NYT19) PITTSBURGH -- Sept. 8, 2003 -- SCI-BIOPSIES -- Biopsies of almost every organ have changed significantly in the past decade. Many procedures are now minimally invasive, and the amount of tissue extracted is becoming smaller and smaller. "Many of the techniques may be able to be done with fine needle aspirates, a thin needle that doesn't remove a thread of tissue, but just individual cells,'' said Dr. Jonathan I. Epstein, professor of pathology, urology and oncology at Johns Hopkins. "We recommend to anybody to get a second opinion on a biopsy before they go to chemotherapy, surgery or radiation treatment,'' Dr. Michael J. Becich said. Becich at he University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003. (Jeff Swensen/The New York Times)
