(NYT48) NEW YORK -- Sept. 8, 2003 -- 9-11-VIGNETTES-II -- For the grieving widows, mothers and children of Middletown, N.J., it was a year of shedding the numbness, embracing the rituals of death and, for even some of the most distraught, dipping a toe into the pleasures of living. Two years after they were battered by the horrors of terrorism, the 36 families here who lost loved ones in the World Trade Center are still haunted by the final panicked phone calls or bewildered by the demands of raising children alone. Barbara Minervino now leads a bereavement group at her church. Minervino at her home in Middletown on Sept. 4, 2003. (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
