(NYT34) BILOXI, Miss. -- Sept. 18, 2003 -- SCHOOLS-VIDEO-CAMERAS -- A digital camera hangs over a classroom monitering students at North Bay Elementary School in Biloxi, Mississippi, Sept. 14, 2003. The surveillance system is at the leading edge of a trend to outfit public schools with the same cameras used in Wal-Marts to catch thieves. Fearful of violence, particularly in light of the nation's experience with school shootings, educators across the country are rushing to install ceiling-mounted cameras in hallways, libraries and cafeterias. But no other district has gone as far the Gulf Coast community of Biloxi, Miss. (James Edward Bates/The New York Times) *LITE
