(NYT10) SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- Sept. 1, 2003 -- CALIF-SHARKS -- A handful of white sharks, which can grow to more than 20 feet long and have long been feared as the oceans' fiercest predator, appear to have found a home in San Clemente, Calif., just off San Onofre State Beach, a popular spot for surfers, some of whom say they have had extremely close encounters with the beasts. One surfer catches a wave while others paddle to catch theirs at Old Man Beach, just 1 mile north of San Onofre State Beach, Aug. 31,2003. (Robert Galbraith/The New York Times)
