(NYT5) NEW YORK -- August 22, 2003 -- Adv. for Sunday, Aug. 24 -- SIMMONS -- As America's depressed clothing merchants struggle for survival in a sea of bored and bargain-hungry shoppers, Russell Simmons is getting ready to break out. Simmons, a hip-hop impresario with a clothing company named Phat Farm, is already putting his company's brands on $300 million worth of goods a year at wholesale: everything from perforated nylon basketball shirts to zebra-printed bustier to baby clothes. Simmons on the stage of the play "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam" in New Yorn City on Nov. 1, 2002. (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
