(NYT18) BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Aug. 22, 2003 -- IRAQ-PROTEST -- Turkomans protest, with a portrait of Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakeem slain by Saddam in the early 90's, outside a hotel mainly used by journalists in Baghdad, Friday, August 22, 2003. They had come from Tus, a small town near Kirkuk in a convoy of cars bearing five coffins and were on their way to the religious city of Najaf to the shrine of Imam Ali where the five bodies would be buried. They said the five men were killed in demonstrations to protest the destruction of a newly-opened shrine in their village, which they blamed on Kurds who also live there. The demonstrators accused the Kurds of firing on the demonstration. (Justin Lane/The New York Times)
