(NYT37) BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Aug. 20, 2003 -- IRAQ-SCENE-2 -- Until now, most of the risks of everyday life in Iraq have fallen into relatively clear and comprehensible categories: rampant street crime; attacks by loyalists of Saddam Hussein's government; and bullets fired, accidentally or not, by U.S. soldiers. But in the wake of the bombing of the U.N. compound, Baghdad's ceaseless conspiracy mill, with all its comforting certainties, appeared to be confounded momentarily. Even the few who applauded the act seemed mystified by the identity of the attackers. "The U.N. is not a humanitarian organization, they work for U.S. intelligence," says Mehsin Jassim, an electrician, left, as he sat at an outdoor cafe in Baghdad, Aug. 20, 2003, with his two friends Hayder Abbas, middle, and Sadoun al Jibouri, right.
