(NYT9) ST. LOUIS -- Aug. 30, 2003 -- POPE-PIUS-DOCUMENTS -- Pope Pius XII has been branded by some authors and Jewish leaders as "Hitler's Pope'' for his silence during the Holocaust. Now, diplomatic documents recently brought to light by Charles R. Gallagher, a Jesuit historian, indicate that while serving as a Vatican diplomat, the future pope expressed strong antipathy to the Nazi regime in private communication with U.S. officials. Gallagher stands in front of a bust of Pope Pius XII inside of Pope Pius XII Library on the campus of St. Louis University in St. Louis on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. (Peter Newcomb/The New York Times)
