(NYT10) NAJAF, Iraq -- Aug. 30, 2003 -- IRAQ-NAJAF-SCENE -- On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Najaf, Nabil Atta, 17, weeping over the coffin of his mother, who, along with her sister and 80 other people, was killed in the car bombing. A tide of grief surged through the holy city as thousands of Shiite Muslim mourners poured in from throughout Iraq, walking silently through the largely sealed city to the corner of the sacred shrine where their beloved spiritual leader Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim was assassinated on Friday, Aug. 29, 2003.
