(NYT11) CHEBEAGUE ISLAND, Maine -- August 28, 2003 -- ISLAND-CLUNKERS-3 -- Chebeague Island is one of 15 islands in Maine without state-maintained roads where vehicles registered for island use need not pass state inspection. As in Cuba, with its storied cars of older vintage, the Maine islands offer a second life to autos that elsewhere would have been fed to compactors. Ted Haykal, left, and Jake Gilman tinker with the engine in Gilman's island vehicle on Aug. 21, 2003, which is registered for island use only. (Herb Swanson/The New York Times)
