(NYT7) CHEBEAGUE ISLAND, Maine -- August 28, 2003 -- ISLAND-CLUNKERS -- Chebeague Island is one of 15 islands in Maine without state-maintained roads where vehicles registered for island use need not pass state inspection. As in Cuba, with its storied cars of older vintage, the Maine islands offer a second life to autos that elsewhere would have been fed to compactors. A special sticker on the back of this Jeep earmarks it for island use only. (Herb Swanson/The New York Times)
