(NYT24) WASHINGTON -- August 27, 2003 ---Adv. for Sunday, Aug. 31 -- WTC-NAMES -- By aesthetic and social consensus, names are today a kind of reflexive memorial impulse, lists of names having come almost automatically to connote "memorial," just as minimalism has come to be the presumptive sculptural style for memorial design. Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, from 1982, sidestepped historical debates to make names the basic fact of the Vietnam War, and established minimalism as the accepted sculptural style for memorials.
