(NYT19) FREEPORT, Maine -- Aug. 26, 2002 -- LLBEAN-MALLS -- In July, Chris McCormick, the new president of L.L. Bean, and several other company employees took a 160-mile bike ride to Washington County, Maine near the Canadian border. In the time-honored tradition of the venerable clothing and outdoor good company, the excursion was more than fun and games: it was an exercise in product testing.
