(NYT21) TBILISI, Georgia -- Aug. 22, 2002 -- CHECHEN-REBELS -- Adlan, and a band of Chechen fighters recently crossed into Georgia from Chechnya to escape Russian troops. He and other fighters fear retribution against their families if their real names are revealed. Almost three years after its forces stormed Chechnya a second time, Russia is mired in a war of attrition against small groups of fighters like these. The fighters are no longer able to confront Russian troops head-on, but they remain determined to inflict as much pain as possible in the name of Chechen independence. "If I stay alive," Adlan asserted, "I will fight in 10 wars -- until they leave Chechnya alone." (Yuri Kozyrev/The New York Times)*LITE
