(NYT7) PLAINFIELD, Vt. -- Aug. 22, 2002 -- GODDARD-CAMPUS-BOS-3 -- In a move that has not only triggered hair-tearing upheaval on the pastoral campus of Goddard College -- a revered icon among progressive schools -- in Plainfield, Vt., but caused some mournful self-assessment the length of the Green Mountain range, the college's board of trustees voted in June to shut down the school's 64-year-old campus program, leaving only its "low-residence" program, in which the mostly adult students visit the school just once a semester. "The college lost its focus," says Clotilde Pitkin, Goddard alumna and daughter-in-law of its founder. Pitkin on her property in Plainfield. (Michelle McDonald/The New York Times)
