(NYT33) NEW YORK -- Aug. 13, 2002 -- NY-9-11-DEMS -- Tom Golisano says New York needs a conservative governor. He said Tuesday that the state must cut Medicaid spending, stand up to health care workers and "break the hold of the teachers' union.'' To which the Democrats say bravo. They may be appalled privately by Golisano's platform, but Democrats are rooting for him, and some are actively helping him. Democratic candidate for governor, H. Carl McCall, center, met Tuesday in Manhattan with workers of Local 721 of SEIU, the health-care union. The local endorsed him for governor. (Andrea Mohin/The New York Times)
