(NYT32) AMARNATH CAVE, Kashmir -- Aug. 4, 2002 -- KASHMIR-PILGRIMS -- Hindu pilgrims camp out in the Kashmiri valley, the home of the remote Amarnath Cave, with its shrine to Lord Shiva. More than 100,000 Hindu pilgrims hiked at least 19 miles, slept in freezing temperatures above 10,000 feet and braved attacks from Muslim militants, all for a hurried glimpse of an ice stalagmite that forms each year on the wall of the remote cave. The nine-foot-tall ice sheet, shaped like a phallus, is considered to be the symbol of Lord Shiva, one of Hinduism's three most revered gods. (David Rohde/The New York Times)
