(NYT39) QUEBEC -- Aug. 2, 2002 -- CANADA-IMMIG-WRITER -- Neil Bissoondath dedicated his new novel, "Doing The Heart Good," to his uncle and mentor, V.S. Naipaul, who wrote him a letter when he was a teenager advising him to migrate to Canada from their native Trinidad and to pursue his ambition of becoming a writer. Four novels, two short-story collections and one book of essays after that letter, the 47-year-old Bissoondath says he has followed his uncle's counsel. Along the way, he has become a leading light of contemporary Canadian letters. Bissoondath at his Sainte-Foy residence near Quebec City. (Robert J. Galbraith/The New York Times)
