(NYT17) NORTH HAVEN, N.Y. -- Aug. 7, 2002 -- OUTDOOR-BATHING-2 -- Henry David Thoreau never had plumbing at his famous shack. But if he did, he surely would have built an outdoor shower placed so that he could gaze, lost in reverie, at the reflections on Walden Pond while rinsing off the sweat of his labors. But you don't have to be Thoreau to value the elemental pleasures of al fresco bathing. Standing naked in the open air as the sun glistens through a veil of water: to anyone who still relishes the simplicity of country life, this is the essence of summer. In North Haven, N.Y., Alexis Bruce, enjoys an open shower at her father Angus Bruce's house. (Maxine Hicks/The New York Times)
