The New York Times Agency May 2010
(NYT33) NEW YORK -- July 18, 2002 -- AOL-MERGER -- Stephen Case, right, of America Online and Gerald Levin of Time Warner during a news conference announcing the merger of their two companies in January, 2000. Of all the misconceptions about the merger of America Online and Time Warner, the biggest and most fundamental was that AOL was acquiring the vastly bigger Time Warner, rather than the other way around. Now, with the resignation of Robert W. Pittman, there are no AOL veterans in the company's top operating jobs, although AOL's founder Stephen Case remains the non executive, and seemingly distant, chairman.
