(NYT34) NEW YORK -- July 3, 2002 -- NY-TERROR-SECURITY-3 -- Around the country, people are treating this Independence Day differently, with reactions ranging from a fervent flowering of patriotism to a sense of sober reflection. And everywhere cities and towns are trying strike a balance: They know that the need to commemorate July 4th is poignantly strong this year, but so is the need to guard against terrorists seeking to take advantage of the day. Bhavdeep and Kirti, tourists from Chicago who would not give their last names at the Statue of Liberty, Wednesday. The couple said they liked New York so much that they visited for a week every year.
