(NYT6) ATLANTA -- -- July 5, 2002 -- OBIT-WILLIAMS-6 -- Ted Williams tips his hat after being introduced as part of the All-Century Team at Turner Field on Oct. 24, 1999 before the start of Game 2 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves. Williams, the Boston Red Sox revered and sometimes reviled "Splendid Splinter" and baseball's last .400 hitter, died Friday July 5, 2002 at age 83. Applauding from left is Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr. Seventeen living members of the 30-player All-Century team, the greatest gathering of baseball talent ever assembled on one field, were introduced before the game to a roaring ovation. A giant portrait of Williams is in the background. (Barton Silverman/New York Times Photo)
