(NYT37) NEW YORK -- July 4, 2002 -- JULY-4TH-NY-2 -- Fireworks explode and light up the sky high above New York's East River, during Macys' annual Fourth of July fireworks show, Thursday. Security was heavy and the heat oppressive in New York Thursday, but crowds that mixed vigilance with unabashed patriotism cheered small-town parades, attended baseball games and band concerts, flocked to parks and beaches and lined New York's East River for the thundering, glittering nightcap -- with a somber pause halfway through to remember the victims of Sept. 11.
