(NYT8) NEW YORK -- July 3, 2002 -- NY-HALE-TRIAL -- Lorraine Hale is escorted from Manhattan State Supreme Court Wednesday by her attorneys, after her long career at the helm of the world-renowned Hale House came to an ignominious end when she pleaded guilty to stealing from the children's charity as part of a deal to avoid jail. Hale, the 76-year-old daughter of the home's famous founder, Clara "Mother" Hale, spoke softly as she admitted to the crime that scarred the good name of her mother's life work. The plea to fourth-degree grand larceny in will leave her penniless, her lawyer said. Her husband, Jesse DeVore, 70, directly behind Hale, pleaded guilty to attempted forgery.
