(NYT27) NEW YORK -- July 4, 2002 -- ADV. FOR SUN. JULY 7 -- MUSIC-BANGLEWOOD -- For 15 years, Bang on a Can, the scrappy downtown music festival, ensemble, commissioning body and record producer, has been serving as an alternative to mainstream classical-music institutions. Now, with the Bang on the Can Summer Institute of Music opening July 12 in North Adams, Mass., it has a teaching arm where some 25 young composers, conductors and performers from six countries will gather to study with a select group of older composers and musicians. With Banglewood so near Tanglewood, a question arises: Is the anti-academy becoming an academy? David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon, the founders of Bang on a Can, the scrappy festival, ensemble, commissioning body, record producer and institute. (Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times)
