(NYT20) NEW YORK -- July 4, 2002 -- ADV. FOR SUN. JULY 7 -- THEATER-SHAKESPEARE-IN-PARK-2 -- Waiting in line for tickets to Shakespeare in the Park is a New York ritual. Last summer, to get tickets to Mike Nichols's production of ??The Seagull,'' audiences lined up at dawn in the hope of seeing Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Natalie Portman on stage. Even at that star-filled event, the audience comprised a cross-section of theatergoers from Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (who didn't have to stand in line) to your Aunt Myra. The Delacorte and free Shakespeare are the public antidote to $100 Broadway tickets. It's also the place to spot great New York actors before they become stars. A production of "Romeo and Juliet" in Central Park in 1968. At the Delacorte Theater, the city becomes part of the set. (Sam Falk/The New York Times)
