(NYT25) NEW YORK -- Feb. 13, 2003 -- HARLEM-JAZZ -- It's Sunday night at American Legion Post 138 on West 132nd Street in Harlem and along a wall by the door, young men with saxophones and trumpets lean forward reverently as the tenor saxophonist Max Lucas steps up between the drummer and guitarist to take an impassioned solo. At 92, Lucas can still blow with the best of them, but, more than that, he is a living link to a golden age of jazz that is brought joyously to life each Sunday at the legion hall in a weekly jam session that attracts players and fans from the neighborhood and around the world. From left, the saxophonists Ansy Defay and Karel Ruzicka, with Seleno Clarke, who runs the sessions and the trumpeter Gil Defay at American Legion Post 138 in December 2002.
