(NYT6) OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Feb. 22, 2003 -- AFFIRM-PLAINTIFFS -- Jennifer Gratz says she lost confidence and gave up plans to become a doctor after being rejected by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Like tens of thousands of other applicants to colleges and graduate schools each year, Gratz received a rejection letter in the 1990s from the institution that was their first choice. But unlike so many others who have had their hearts broken by an admissions committee, Grantz vented her anger and disappointment by suing. She answered an open call in 1997 from several Republican state legislators and a public-interest law firm seeking volunteers to challenge the university's race-conscious admissions policies.
