(NYT34) BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Jan. 31, 2003 -- IRAQ-BAGHDAD-2 -- Even in the vast, filthy slum of Saddam City, a miserable corner of Baghdad, there is no crack in the official line: The Iraqi people will fight off any attack by the United States with their own hands, if they must. But they show no hostility toward an American reporter, and offer praise for the American people, if not their leaders. It is thus a mystery of much importance exactly what the Iraqi people -- who could turn this nation into a graveyard for American soldiers or who could also simply leave their leader to his fate -- are thinking on the brink of war. Iraqi woman walk through the main market in Saddam City on the eastern edge of Baghdad, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003. (Farah Nosh/The New York Times)
