(NYT3) NEW YORK -- March 1, 2003 -- BKN-EWING-3 -- The atmosphere was electric, beyond that of a playoff game. It was more like the tribute Michael Jordan received at last month's NBA All-Star Game or the presentation of the league's 50 greatest players six years ago in Cleveland. But this celebration, this commemoration, this outpouring of appreciation was all about Patrick Ewing. Friday night, Feb. 28, 2003, at halftime of the Knicks' game against the Orlando Magic, in a ceremony that lasted roughly 35 minutes, the Knicks lifted Ewing's jersey number 33 to the Madison Square Garden rafters. Ewing, after a celebrated 17-year career, watching action during Friday's Knicks game with father Carl and daughter Corey. (Barton Silverman/The New York Times)
