(NYT28) QALAILYA, West Bank -- March 4, 2003 -- WEST-BANK-ZOO -- Brownie the giraffe, who zoo keepers say died of heart attack during an exchange of fire between Palestinians and Israelis, and the only zebra of the zoo, who died after choking on teargas, are seen after they were stuffed by a taxidermist at the Qalailya Zoo, Monday, March 3, 2003. The giraffe's still-born baby was also stuffed. A macabre transformation is underway at the only extensive zoo in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. As the animals vanish from the tidy cages, they are reappearing, stuffed, in the zoo's museum. (Rina Castelnuovo/The New York Times) *LITE
