(NYT13) NEW YORK -- Feb. 20, 2003 -- BARNEY-EXHIBIT-2 -- These days, the closest we get to an American art star with reach beyond the art world is Matthew Barney, whose exhibition "The Cremaster Cycle" at the fiscally pinched Guggenheim, delayed a year, opens Friday, Feb. 21. It arrives via Cologne and Paris, where it was a hit especially among young fans, who get Barney instantly, and predictably mystified innumerable other people uninitiated into the Barney mythos. No doubt it will get a similar reception in New York. Barney at the show Feb. 4, 2003, by a display of vitrines containing specially designed laser disks representing each of his five films.
