(NYT18) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 16, 2003 -- WHITEHOUSE-LETTER -- A lot has changed at the White House since Sept. 11, 2001, the day the staff ran for the gates, some barefoot women carrying their high heels, to escape what was thought to be a hijacked plane heading for the symbolic heart of the American presidency. Security at the White House has increased markedly in the last year and a half, but so, too, has the staff's sense of fatalism. The White House now features cases of emergency supplies, above, as well as metal detectors and bomb-detecting dogs. A case with emergency supplies is seen in the rear of the White House breifing room, Friday, Feb. 14, 2003. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
