(NYT47) NEW YORK -- Feb. 14, 2003 -- LAUREN-FASHION-2 -- Coming off a strong men's fall collection in Milan, it was evident that designer Ralph Lauren wanted to hold on to the English peacock silhouette of a shapely coat in Harris tweed or a muddy green plaid pantsuit worn with a lavender shirt and velvet necktie. For Lauren wasn't just putting his spin on Mod, a recurring theme as the New York fall 2003 drew to a close. He was also sifting through his own fashion history. That's what made this show so compelling to watch. He was playing himself, in all his parts. A worker's cap worn with a double-breasted jacket and tweed pants, left, and a quilted patchwork top with puff sleeves by Lauren were shown at a fashion show in Manhattan on Feb. 14, 2003.
