(NYT23) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 10, 2003 -- REPUBS-DEFICIT -- Seven years ago freshman Representative Sue Myrick won the "deficit hawk'' award of the Concord Coalition, a group dedicated to eradicating red ink in all its federal forms. Four terms later, Myrick is now an elder in the House and the chairwoman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of the most fiscally conservative House members. Myrick, and the group she leads, have adopted a new attitude toward the deficit they once abhorred. They are not fond of it but for now they say it plays a useful role in fighting off something they like even less -- government spending. Myrick during an interview on Capitol Hill on Feb, 5, 2003.
