(NYT11) SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq -- Feb. 9, 2003 -- IRAQ-KURDS-AMBUSH -- Hersh Hussain Khadir, 13, a, Kurdish child, hit by hand grenade shrapnel on his left leg during an ambush of senior Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Gen. Khadir's brother was also hit by the shrapnel. Gunmen posing as defectors from an Islamic extremist group killed Mushir and two other Kurdish officials Saturday night, Feb. 8. Kurdish officials blamed the Ansar al-Islam organization for the attack, which the PUK says has ties to the al-Qaida network, and was singled out by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell as a terrorist-linked organization during his appearance before the U.N.
