(NYT51) NEW YORK -- Jan. 23, 2003 -- NY-SHARPTON-FIRE -- On Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, the Rev. Al Sharpton announced that he was forming a presidential exploratory committee. The next morning, his headquarters in Harlem was destroyed in a fire. Fire marshals said the cause of the blaze was a faulty extension cord near some boxes of leaflets. They ruled it accidental. But in Harlem, on the streets around Sharpton's office, that explanation did not carry much weight among those who have long viewed Sharpton as a persecuted hero of their community and looked at the fire as the latest example of that persecution. Sharpton, second from left, arriving at the site of the fire Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, for a press conference with Dennis Rivera, foreground, head of Local 1199 a health care union, and former New York City mayor David L. Dinkins, third from left. (Don Hogan Charles/The New York Times)
