(NYT11) PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jan. 11, 2003 -- SCHOOL-CUTBACKS -- Thousands of America's districts are grappling with extraordinary midyear budget cuts as state governments face deficits that stem from falling tax revenues. Most are laying off bus drivers and cutting art classes and field trips, and educators say the havoc will be worse next year. Linda Pattison, at Llewellyn Elementary in Portland, Ore., working with fourth-grader, Elias H. Rosen, 9, on a math exercise, Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, is deciding what she won't teach in a school year shortened by budget woes. "I can only compare this to my divorce," she says.
