(NYT27) **RETRANSMISSION TO ADD INFORMATION TO LAST LINE IN CAPTION** ANNISTON, Ala. -- Jan. 8, 2003 -- SUB-WORKER-SAFETY-II -- The untold story of how the McWane family ascended into the ranks of the nation's wealthiest industrial dynasties is an often painful one, written in the blood and tears of the very blue-collar workers celebrated by a 56-foot Vulcan statue that is Birmingham's icon. McWane Inc., one of the world's largest makers of cast-iron water and sewer pipes, has by far the worst safety record in an industry that, for three of the last four years, has had the highest injury rate in the nation. Union Foundry, one of two McWane plants in Anniston, Ala., was a dangerous place to work. In 1995, it had about 350 employees and recorded more than 250 injuries, internal company records show. A sign at the gate of the Union Foundry in Anniston, Ala., in Aug. 2002 is part of a new high-profile safety campaign. (James Estrin/The New York Times) *LITE
