(NYT36) JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Jan. 8, 2003 -- WORKER-SAFETY-II-6 -- The untold story of how the McWane family ascended into the ranks of the nation's wealthiest industrial dynasties is an often painful one, written in the blood and tears of the very blue-collar workers celebrated by a 56-foot Vulcan statue that is Birmingham's icon. McWane Inc., one of the world's largest makers of cast-iron water and sewer pipes, has by far the worst safety record in an industry that, for three of the last four years, has had the highest injury rate in the nation. "The people, they're nothing," says Robert S. Rester, a former plant manager who was with McWane for 24 years. "They're just numbers." Rester at his Jacksonville, Ala. home in Aug. 2002.
