(NYT36) HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii -- Jan. 7, 2003 -- Adv. for Sun., Jan. 12 -- TRAVEL-HAWAII-VOLCANO-4 -- Kilauea's current eruption, 20 years old on Jan. 3, embodies the cycles of birth and destruction like few other spectacles on earth. It has covered 42.6 square miles of Hawaii's youngest and largest island -- including homes, villages and archaeological sites -- and added just under a square mile, including black sand beaches and "benches'' of land that can collapse at any moment. An image of transience, power and fury, it is also unusually accessible, which makes it dangerous not only for its toxic steam plumes but also for its sheer unpredictability. Tourists walk across a dry lava bed at the end of the Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii in December. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
