(NYT48) NEW YORK -- Jan. 7, 2003 -- GORDON-RACE-EDUC -- Edmund W. Gordon, 81, could reasonably be called the premier black psychologist of his generation: a professor emeritus at both Yale and Columbia, a scholar in residence at the College Board, the head of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Columbia's Teachers College and the author of more than 175 scholarly articles and a dozen books. Gordon cites "good parentage'' as the root of his success, says he "never considered not being an educated person,'' and always knew he was college-bound. Gordon at Columbia University on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003. (Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times)
