(NYT46) HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Jan. 7, 2003 -- FBN-GIANTS-FANS-2 -- Fans had already suffered a lifetime's worth of anguish on Sunday when the Giants fluffed a field goal on the final play of their playoff game, after surrendering a lead gargantuan enough to beat two football teams. Then the National Football League comes along on Monday and admitted that the game officials goofed and the Giants should have been granted another play that might have brought salvation, instead of a heartbreaking and season-ending 39-38 loss in San Francisco. All over New York fans howled their indignation. Firefighter Dennis Rhodes says "If the defense made one play in the last 17 minutes, they don't lose the game.''
