(NYT44) WASHINGTON -- Jan. 7, 2003 -- DASCHLE-POLITICS -- Tom Daschle, right, the Senate Democratic leader, reversed course on Tuesday and said he would not seek the Democratic nomination to run for president in 2004, and would instead run for re-election to the Senate from South Dakota. Daschle's decision, which he said he reached late on Monday night, startled Democrats, potential rivals and his own aides, who had drafted papers to form a presidential exploratory committee and had tentatively scheduled an announcement ceremony in Aberdeen, S.D., for Saturday. Daschle and Sen. Charles E. Schumer in Washington on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
