(NYT8) NEW YORK -- Jan. 7, 2003 -- CAKE -- In 1999, Anne Byrn wrote a cookbook that taught readers how to doctor store-bought cake mixes to achieve bakery-like results. It has sold nearly 1.5 million copies since, and fostered a nearly religious following of home cooks. The book is now entering its 25th printing. In 2001, she followed it up with "Chocolate From the Cake Mix Doctor,'' which has sold 420,000 copies, and next fall will bring "The Dinner Doctor,'' in which she plans to speed up the main course the way she already has dessert.
