(NYT16) MOUNT BLUE STATE PARK, Maine -- Jan. 6, 2003 -- SCI-HEINRICH-WINTER-ECOLOGY-2 -- Dr. Bernd Heinrich, a quirky biologist at the University of Vermont, has a particularly close connection to the land near Mount Blue State Park in Maine. It is on this land that he teaches a course in winter ecology each year to about 10 University of Vermont undergraduates. They camp for a week in his cabin, taking field trips through his woods. This work inspired his latest book, "Winter World: The Ingenuity of Winter Survival.'' Heinrich has spent a lot of time in these particular woods over the past 25 years or so, exploring and studying them. Knowledge, he says, changes the way people see a place and what they look for. In November, Heinrich looks for the nest of a winter wren in the Maine woods. (James Gorman/The New York Times)
