(NYT19) SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq -- Feb. 26,2003 -- IRAQ-KURDS-TURKEY -- Protesters, mostly students from Sulamaniyah University, burn Turkish flags as Kurdish flags are waved nearby near the U.N. compound in the northern Iraqi town, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003. Turkey wants to send troops to northern Iraq -- beyond Baghdad's control since the 1991 Gulf war -- to thwart any independence moves by local Kurds as well as deal with Turkish Kurdish rebels based in the enclave. Ankara also wants to prevent a possible influx of refugees to its soil. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times) *LITE
