(NYT39) SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq -- Feb. 26, 2003 -- IRAQ-KURDS-3 -- The mother of Saman Mohamad, a Kurdish taxi driver, mourns outside the forensics department at Sulaimaniyah General Hospital in Sulaimaniyah, Iraq, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003. Mohamad was killed when a man detonated a bomb he was wearing near a Kurdish military headquarters in northern Iraq on Wednesday, killing himself and three others in what authorities described as the first Kurdish suicide bombing. Authorities said the attack, at a military checkpoint in Zamaqi, was in all likelihood the work of Ansar al-Islam, a militant Islamic group that the U.S. claims has connections to both al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein. It occurred when a sport utility vehicle used as a taxi was stopped at a checkpoint by Kurdish guards. A Kurdish security official said the guards were suspicious of the taxi's passenger and asked him to leave the vehicle for an inspection. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
